Benicia is located in central California in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city once served as the state capital for almost thirteen months in 1853. In 1847 the city was founded by Dr. Robert Semple, Thomas O. Larkin and Comandante General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. The General had hoped to name the town Francisca after his wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo, but changed his mind when the nearby town of Yerba Buena changed its name to San Francisco. Fire departments from three cities battled a three-alarm vegetation fire that began on Tuesday morning off Admiral Callaghan Lane, a spokesperson for the Vallejo Fire Department said. The fire was first reported at 8:36 a.m. in the open space near the Target shopping area, where Admiral Callaghan meets Turner Parkway.

A three-alarm fire quickly turned into a five-alarm blaze on Saturday afternoon around 12:15 p.m. on Cassidy Street in Vallejo. The fire jumped onto nearby cypress trees and caused damage to at least three other structures, a spokesperson for the Vallejo Fire Department said.

County needs more poll workers for June election

The Solano County Registrar of Voters announced Friday that it needs an additional 140 people to work at polling locations in the upcoming primary election on June 5. "It takes more than 800 citizens to help conduct a statewide primary election and we are still a little short," said Solano County Assistant Registrar of Voters John Gardner in a news release. "For their Election Day duties and training commitment, all poll workers, including alternates, receive a stipend ranging between $50 and $250, depending on the position." The county is seeking two inspectors for the cities of Benicia and Fairfield.
