Carrollton is located in west central Georgia in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The land once belonged to the Creek Indians and was incorporated in 1829. It was named for Charles Carroll, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. The town was featured in the 1983 Murder in Coweta County although no scenes were filmed in Carrollton. It was also mentioned in both the novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and the movie of the same name. Man charged with murder

Ryan Roger Wilkins, 36, made his first appearance in court before Chief Superior Court Judge David Emerson Thursday morning for alledgedly murdering Leonardo Walker at Wilkins' residence at 4485 River Stone Trail in Douglasville. The death occured between May 13 at 8 a.m. and May 15 at 6:30 p.m., according to the arrest warrant.

Surveys are in as city continues its comp plan work

With public surveys complete and input meetings held, the city of Carrollton is working on writing a comprehensive plan for the future of the city over the next 10 years. A survey was posted on the city's website asking residents what they would like to incorporate in the plan.

A 'shining example' of the 'Greatest Generation'

Hugh Lee Young, native of Roopville and one of the longest surviving POWs in Georgia, died Friday at the age of 95. Young was laid to rest on May 15 by an honor guard from the American Legion Post 143 at the Carroll Memory Gardens in Carrollton. Donald Levans, past commander of Post 143 in Carrollton, said he first met Young at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park in May 2007.

The Douglas County Fire Department is investigating a deadly house fire in Lithia Springs that took two lives. The fire happened sometime around 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Man threatens store employee with knife

A Lowe's store employee was threatened with a knife by a man after escorting the suspect outside, police said. The employee told police the man had been asked many times not to return to the Carrollton store because he was suspected of shoplifting.

Phillip Singleton, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Drew Ferguson for Georgia's District 3 congressional seat spoke in Carrollton on Monday, talking with residents about issues ranging from gun violence to the federal budget. District 3 includes several counties in west Georgia, including Carroll, Heard, Coweta, Troup, Meriwether, Harris, Fayette and Muscogee.
