Castro Valley is located in central California. The city was named in honor of Don Guillermo Castro, a rancher and a soldier in the Mexican army. Castro was given a land grant that consisted of 28,000 acres. Because he had a gambling habit, he ended up having to sell off portions of the land in order to pay off some of his gambling debts. Alameda County may allow more microbreweries

The suggested change in county zoning laws, set to be heard Oct. 16 by the county planning commission, would allow microbreweries on agricultural parcels in unincorporated areas. Current zoning laws only permit wineries and olive oil mills on agricultural properties in or around Cull Canyon, Palomares and Castro Valley Canyonlands, Pleasanton, Dublin, Sunol and south Livermore.

County officials reopen Palomares Road after lengthy repair work

A frequently traveled road in Alameda County that's been closed since mid-February for stabilization work was reopened at about 10:30 a.m. Friday, county Public Works Agency officials said.
