As the moon tracked its path across the face of the sun Monday - a near-90-percent eclipse, but a barely noticeable dimming in Daytona Beach - John Champion, on vacation from Ocala, used a pair of binoculars to project the sun's waning outline onto the Boardwalk. "After reading about how dangerous it is and the questionable quality of those glasses, I felt it was definitely worth a shot this way," he said, having only realized over the weekend that he was in a prime viewing location.

DAYTONA BEACH - A woman training as a bookkeeper at a beachfront motel asked to make a deposit run and disappeared with more than $18,000, along with her personnel file, police said. Laura Chadwick, 32, of New Smyrna Beach, was arrested Sunday and charged with grand theft of more than $10,000 but less than $20,000.

Inmate claims Luis Toledo confessed to killing Deltona family

A man accused of punching and killing a woman in a bar is claiming that Luis Toledo told him in a jailhouse confession details about how he beat his wife to death, strangled her children then disposed of their bodies, court records show. Michael Lamothe told investigators Toledo told him an another inmate that he "beat the crap" out of his wife, Yessenia Suarez, in their Deltona home, then choked and broke the necks of her children Thalia Otto, 9, and Michael Otto, 8. The bodies of the mother and children have never been found and Toledo did not reveal where he hid them, but Lamothe said the murder suspect told him that he used the chemical lye to help dispose of them.

Weapons turned in as Volusia Kicks 4 Guns buyback program kicks off

Volusia County's version of a larger Central Florida gun buyback program began early Thursday morning and netted about 50 firearms, including a Tec-9 semiautomatic pistol, before noon, authorities said.  Daytona Beach Police Department spokeswoman Lyda Longa said that 36 guns had been collected by 10:30 a.m., about three hours after the program kicked off.
