Overnight I-49 lane closings expected in Lowell, Springdale

Crews constructing ramps for the U.S. 412 Northern Bypass will require overnight lane closings on Interstate 49 through the end of the month. Weather permitting, lanes on I-49 will be closed between Wagon Wheel Road, exit 76, in Springdale and Arkansas 264, exit 78, in Lowell, according to Arkansas Department of Transportation officials.

Four former Fayetteville Health and Rehabilitation Center employees are charged in the theft of more than $14,000, according to an arrest warrant affidavit Friday. Jennifer Thumser, 44, of 2120 W. Wedington Drive surrendered to law enforcement officials Friday and was booked into the Washington County jail on charges of conspiracy to commit theft of property and conspiracy to commit fraudulent use of a credit card.

Springdale to do 'smoke testing' this month

The city's water utilities will do "smoke testing" in an area south of East Huntsville Avenue to East Meadow Avenue and between Hewitt Street and Arkansas 265 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Aug. 31. The work is being done to reduce rain water inflow into the sewer system and reduce the cost of wastewater treatment, according to a news release. Throughout the process, crews will put smoke into the sewer system.

UA law clinic will take new illegal alien cases

The University of Arkansas School of Law's immigration clinic will once again enroll new students and take on new cases after the hire of a visiting professor, said Annie Smith, director of the law school's Civil Litigation and Advocacy Clinic. Her arrival comes at a time of increased demand for immigration legal services in Northwest Arkansas, said Drew Devenport, an immigration attorney based in Springdale, who stepped in at the law school after the departure of the immigration clinic's first director, Elizabeth Young.

Lake Fayetteville tree removal underway

Crews have begun removing 19 established sycamore trees on the east side of the paved trail that runs along the lake dam between the marina and spillway bridge. Tim Nyander, the city's utilities director, said the work is expected to last through the end of the day on Friday, Aug. 4. Anyone who circles the lake on foot or by bicycle should be aware that the trail over the dam is completely closed, meaning the only trail-based option for getting back to Veterans Park is turning around and making the 5-mile trek back to that side of the lake.
