Originally settled by a Bishop in 1753 the name Salem rose from a translation of the Hebrew word Shalom. Winston was formed in 1849 and named after a Revolutionary War hero. The towns combined in 1889 when the mail offices for both areas were merged. The economy grew up mostly around the Reynolds Tobacco Company.
