Georgia lawmakers learn political ropes, issues at Biennial Institute

Most of the 236 members of the Georgia General Assembly were in Athens this week for the University of Georgia's 31st Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators. Coordinated by the university's Carl Vinson Institute of Government, the institute is designed to give legislators information about some of the issues they'll be taking up when the Legislature convenes in January, and to give newly elected legislators a basic education in how legislation and state government work.

Athens bar agrees to temporary shut down after discrimination accusation

An Athens bar accused of discrimination recently agreed to a temporary shut down after its owner signed a consent order with the Athens-Clarke County government. The downtown watering hole was accused of violating a provision of the Athens-Clarke County alcoholic beverages ordinance designed to discourage discrimination in bar admissions.

2nd arrest made in Oak Hill shooting

A second suspect was arrested Friday while Athens-Clarke County police continued to search for a third suspect in an alleged murder Monday night at Oak Hill Apartments. The arrested suspect was identified as 31-year-old Maurice Antwone Lawrence of Athens.

Athens police find furry intruder when responding to burglary

A 24-year-old Athens woman recently armed herself with a hair dryer while huddled in a locked bathroom because she thought a burglar had broken into her westside home. The incident occurred at about 9 a.m. Saturday when the 24-year-old King Avenue woman called 911 to report she was barricaded in an upstairs bathroom with a hair dryer because she heard "suspicious and alarming noises" coming from downstairs, including glass breaking and what she thought was someone moving around, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

Student with loaded gun arrested at Cedar Shoals High

Authorities arrested on Wednesday a 15-year-old student at Cedar Shoals High School for possessing a loaded gun allegedly used in two drive-by shootings. The student was arrested after police were notified at about 2 p.m. Wednesday by the Clarke County School District authorities that they had reason to believe a student was in possession of a gun.

Police: Athens man murdered at eastside apartments

Athens-Clarke County police are investigating the fatal shooting on Monday of a 31-year-old Athens man at an eastside apartment complex. The shooting death of Walter James Brown Jr. at Oak Hill Apartments is being investigated as a murder, according to police.

Truck wreck, spilled chicken feed, closes Athens bypass for 6 hours

A section of Athens Perimeter in north Athens was closed for nearly six hours Sunday after two large tractor-trailer trucks wrecked shortly before 8 a.m. One truck was carrying chicken feed, which spilled into the highway at the Jefferson Road intersection, according to Athens-Clarke County police. Police said the crash happened when a truck ran into the rear of another truck loaded with the chicken feed.
