Benicia is located in central California in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city once served as the state capital for almost thirteen months in 1853. In 1847 the city was founded by Dr. Robert Semple, Thomas O. Larkin and Comandante General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. The General had hoped to name the town Francisca after his wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo, but changed his mind when the nearby town of Yerba Buena changed its name to San Francisco. Benicia council directs staff to file complaint over "push poll"

City Attorney Heather Mc Laughlin has been directed by a unanimous vote of the council to send a formal complaint to the state about a recent polling survey in the city. Mc Laughlin will send the complaint to the California Fair Political Practices Commission after the polling firms, hired by Valero Benicia Refinery, refused to provide a copy of the questions.

Valero spends money to oppose Benicia candidate Birdseye

According to financial statements submitted to the Benicia City Clerk's Office late last week, the Valero Benicia Refinery is funding a special committee to oppose council candidate Kari Birdseye. The committee, known by a lengthy name, Working Families for a Strong Benicia, a Coalition of Labor, Industrial Services Companies, Public Safety and Local Leaders Supporting Christina Strawbridge and Lionel Largaespada and Opposing Kari Birdseye for Benicia City Council 2018, has raised $124,200 within the past week.

The unemployment rate in Solano County dipped below 4 percent in August, the third straight monthly decline as the local job count jumped by 1,000. The unemployment rate was 3.9 percent, the Labor Market Information Division of the state Employment Development Department first reported Sept.

Vallejo, Benicia at bottom of road condition report for 2017

Solano County streets and roads - the cities and the unincorporated areas combined - were assessed to be in "fair condition" in the latest pavement condition index recently released by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. Benicia City Council directs city attorney to take action against push poll

Fearing an outside group or person is attempting to negatively influence the City Council elections, councilors took action Tuesday night. The council in closed session directed City Attorney Heather McLaughlin to contact the California Fair Political Practices Commission in response to a series of calls residents received that some say smeared one of the council candidates.

Hannigan raises $11,125 for re-election bid

During the first six months of 2018, Solano County Supervisor Erin Hannigan picked up $11,125 in cash contributions for her re-election campaign, according to financial documents. The most notable donation came from Stephen Bryan, president of Orcem Americas, Inc, who donated $250 to Hannigan's campaign in March, records show.
