County Council Reverses Course, Gives Tax Break for Student Housing Near Williams-Brice

Two weeks after narrowly voting to deny a tax break for a Florida company looking to build a student housing complex on Shop Road near Williams-Brice Stadium, Richland County Council reversed course on June 19 and has agreed to give the company the incentive. Council initially voted 6-5 on June 5 to deny a 10-year, 33 percent property tax break - roughly a $4 million discount - for Florida's Reign Living, which has been planning a 132-unit, 507-bed student housing complex at 1087 and 1115 Shop Road, a short distance from where the University of South Carolina football team plays.
