The beacon, which was extinguished as part of a coastal blackout after Pearl Harbor, was not reignited until Pearl Harbor Day 1964, when it was illuminated for one night -- a tradition that has continued for 55 years to honor the victims and survivors.

Civic Leader, Businessman Ed Stokes Dies

Ed Stokes, a longtime civic leader and businessman who founded and built a popular local grocery chain, died on Wednesday at the age of 96. Stokes' death was announced by the city of Lafayette, which said his "generosity knew no bounds." He launched Diablo Foods in the city 50 years ago and grew the independent, family-owned business into four stores, with additional locations in Danville and two in Concord.

Prosecutors Delay Death Penalty Decision In BART Fatal Stabbing Case

Alameda County prosecutors today postponed for three weeks a decision on whether to seek the death penalty for a mentally troubled transient accused of the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Nia Wilson at the MacArthur BART station in July. Concord resident John Lee Cowell, 28, was charged with murder and attempted murder for the stabbing death of Wilson and the stabbing of Letifah Wilson, her 26-year-old sister, at the MacArthur station at 9:36 p.m. on July 22. A month later, prosecutors added a special circumstance allegation that Cowell killed Wilson while lying in wait, an allegation that could result in the death penalty or life in prison without parole if he's convicted.

Locking Shopping Cart Confuses Thief During Theft At Ross In Concord

A locking shopping cart left a thief confused on Saturday night, but he was still able to get away with a large amount of merchandise from the Ross Store located in the Clayton Valley shopping center on Ygnacio Valley Rd. in Concord. Just before 10 p.m., witnesses say two Hispanic men and a white female were walking around the store loading a shopping cart with several items.
