Competency of accused murderer heads to trial

A jury will decide in March if accused murderer Reynaldo Maldanado is competent to aid in his own defense against allegations the former Daly City resident helped ambush a teenage boy in 2001 with a friend who stabbed him repeatedly. A pair court-appointed doctors already found Maldanado, 29, competent but defense attorney Paul DeMeester wants a jury to make the final decision.

The Daly City man convicted seven months ago of murdering his estranged wife while their children were in their home won't be sentenced until next year -- and that's only if he is not granted a new trial. Quincy Dean Norton Sr., 34, was found guilty in May in the first-degree murder of Tamika Mack Norton, 33, and faces 26 years to life in prison.

Driver in triple-fatal crash pleads not guilty

The driver accused of causing a Colma crash that killed three passengers, including his girlfriend, earlier this year pleaded not guilty Monday to three counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, drunk driving and hit-and-run. County Supervisors To Discuss Asking For Gun Show Ban

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will discuss whether to ask the owner and operator of the county fairgrounds in Antioch to consider not allowing possession or sale of firearms at the fairgrounds. While other counties, including Alameda, Marin, Sonoma, San Mateo and Santa Clara, have adopted county ordinances to prohibit gun shows at their county-owned fairgrounds, it isn't that easy in Contra Costa.

The man accused of molesting and snatching a 9-year-old girl from a San Mateo school bathroom last fall and trying to photograph four young female students using the bathroom on a Daly City campus accepted a plea deal Wednesday that will send him to prison for more than 27 years rather than potentially life. Bradley Mrozek, 26, pleaded no contest to one count of kidnapping, two counts of forcibly committing a lewd act on a child under 14 and one count of attempted child pornography possession.

A 53-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after she crashed her Mercedes-Benz into a parked pickup truck in Pacifica late Tuesday afternoon, according to police. Officers responded to the scene of the crash on Palmetto Avenue, just north of Esplanade Avenue, around 4:55 p.m. They determined the driver, Adele Ceballos Garcia of Daly City, had rear-ended the truck and caused it to crash into another parked vehicle - but there were no injuries reported.
