Ed Stokes, a longtime civic leader and businessman who founded and built a popular local grocery chain, died on Wednesday at the age of 96. Laudemer Arboleda, a 33-year-old resident of Newark, suffered multiple gunshot wounds when a Contra Costa County sheriff's Deputy opened fire during an encounter that started around 11 a.m. on Nov. 3 in the vicinity of Cottage Place and Laurel Drive.
