Danville aldermen split on tax-levy proposal ahead of vote

As the city council approaches a December deadline to pass a new property-tax levy, three aldermen are lobbying for no increase, while acting Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. and other aldermen are pushing for a nearly 5 percent bump to put more money toward pension obligations and boost the city's slim financial reserves. Prosecutor: Danville cops justified in shooting man during fatal traffic stop

Two Danville police officers were justified when they fired at a man who was armed with a loaded gun during a fatal traffic stop this past summer, the county's top prosecutor announced Friday. In a letter to a special agent with the Illinois State Police, which investigated the June 12 officer-involved shooting of DaNathe M. Gulliford, Vermilion County State's Attorney Jacqueline Lacy wrote that she conducted a thorough review of all police and autopsy reports, witness statements, squad-car videos, 911 recordings and photographs of the scene and autopsy to determine whether to charge officers Jason Dunavan and Brandon Phillips in the 34-year-old man's death.
