Yard waste pick-up - and the claw - back in the city spotlight

For some Davis residents, the claw is a godsend, collecting the loose yard waste they leave in piles in the street as part of the city's Loose in the Streets program. 13-year-old student with autism died after being physically restrained at school

A 13-year-old student with autism reportedly died last week shortly after he became unresponsive while being physically restrained by a staff member at a Northern California school. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Thursday that the staff at Guiding Hands School in El Dorado Hills restrained the student after he became violent in efforts "to prevent the injury of staff and students."

School board supports motion to rename North Davis Elementary after Dolcini

On Thursday, the Davis school board unanimously approved a motion supporting the recent suggestion by several community members to rename North Davis Elementary in honor of the late Dr. Mary Ellen Dolcini, a Davis native who served as the school's principal in the 1980s. Dolcini served a teacher and administrator in the school district over a period of decades.

A state appellate court has rejected a Davis killer's challenge to a recent Yolo Superior Court ruling that retained his adult-court conviction and his subsequent prison sentence of 52 years to life. Yolo County prosecutors say Thursday's decision by the Third District Court of Appeal also could prevent Daniel Marsh from seeking early release through a new sentencing law - Senate Bill 1391 - slated to take effect Jan. 1. The appellate court summarily denied the Marsh challenge, formally known as a petition for a writ of mandate, which seeks a review of a lower court's decision.
