Council OKs Rezoning for Mound Road Development

June 18 - The Decatur City Council voted Monday in favor of rezoning four lots on the north side of West Mound Road for a two-building commercial development featuring medical offices and a restaurant. The panel voted 6-1 to approve an amended ordinance changing the zoning on 110-140 West Mound from single-family to a Planned Development District, with Councilman Bill Faber casting the dissenting vote.

Park District Announces 4th of July Activities

June 18 - Activities, games, concerts and a fireworks display will make for a family-friendly Independence Day at multiple Decatur Park District facilities. The "Shake the Lake Concert" featuring Best of Summer Stock preview performances and Central Illinois party band Fun DMC will start at 5 p.m. in the "horseshoe" parking lot at Nelson Park, followed by a 20-minute fireworks display over Lake Decatur beginning at approximately 9 o'clock.

Animal advocate cited for animal cruelty

Beth Hughes, 57, has directed the CareVan pet program, which has provided spay and neutering services for animals in households that cannot afford them. A website for the program was offline Monday.

United Way Looking for Volunteers for the BO3K

June 18 - The United Way of Decatur and Mid-Illinois is looking for volunteers for The Big Obstacle 3K, Saturday, July 21st at Fairview Park. The BO3K is an obstacle race made up of military and inflatable obstacles, and Fairview Park will be transformed into a 3K course of climbing walls, tube tunnels, strength endurance and inflatable obstacles which offer challenges to all skill levels of the competitors.

Decatur Police investigating shooting that leaves one wounded

Dozens of area veterans and their family members Thursday toured the new $2.9 million VA outpatient clinic on the city's west side, where more space is meant to allow for a holistic approach to veterans' health care. The new 20,000 square-foot outpatient facility at 792 N. Sunnyside Rd. almost doubles the space taken up by the former site on East Mound Road.

June 14 - Motorists should be aware of road closures on Lincoln Memorial Highway, Drummer Road, East Cantrell Road and West William Street over the next week. The Macon County Highway Department announced oil and chip work will require closure of Lincoln Memorial Highway between Wise Road and Duroc Road, and Drummer between Duroc and School as well as between School and Hampshire.

Torch Run for Special Olympics Passes Through Decatur

June 14 - A group of runners made up of law enforcement officers with the Illinois Department of Corrections made their way north on Route 51 Thursday morning. Thursday, the runners began day four of the Torch Run in at the Macon County Law Enforcement Training Center in Decatur and were scheduled to pass through Forsyth, Maroa, and Clinton before ending the day in Bloomington.

Resident jumps to safety during Decatur fire

The Decatur Fire Department responded to a fire in the 1300 block of South Jasper Street around 10:15 a.m. Fire officials say they were dispatched for a house on fire and that a person had jumped from the window. On scene crews reported smoke coming from the second floor and a fire on the first floor of the two story home.
