Hearing for Woodland woman accused of murder rescheduled

A Solano County Superior Court judge rescheduled to next month legal proceedings for a 30-year-old Woodland woman suspected of a stabbing that eventually led to the death of another woman in August in Fairfield. Iyesia Shauna James appeared Friday morning in Department 17 for a readiness conference and to set a preliminary hearing but, after conferring with attorneys, the judge re-set them to 8:30 a.m. Nov. 16. His client faces one count of murder, among other allegations, including grand theft, brandishing a weapon, trespassing, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Months of legal wrangling have ended for a Fairfield man's sanity phase retrial, which was set to begin Monday, and the Solano County District Attorney and defense attorneys have settled on a 13-year prison sentence for the defendant, convicted in 2017 of trying to kill a Vacaville woman. James E. Barnes, who has a 15-year history of documented mental illness, will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 8 in Judge John B. Ellis' courtroom in the Hall of Justice in Fairfield.

A Fairfield ex-con pleaded not guilty Thursday to multiple felony charges involving an Oct. 15 shooting at a Hampton Place home that shattered a front room window. Witnesses at the shooting scene told police about seeing a red Dodge Charger in the area.

Man shot 12 times at Hilborn, Waterman faces felony gun charges

A Fairfield ex-con who in January was shot 12 times while driving in the area of Waterman Boulevard and Hilborn Road a few months after being acquitted of a murder charge made a brief court appearance Thursday. Authorities suspect Timothy Mitchell III, 27, had a gun and ammunition with him at the time an occupant in another car opened fire on him.

Legal proceedings continue for several accused of felonies

An ex-con from Vacaville with a long criminal history appeared in Department 4 for a preliminary hearing on charges of attempted murder but the proceeding was rescheduled to early next month. Joseph Michael Finocchio, 44, will return to Judge E. Bradley Nelson's courtroom at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 1 for a trial readiness conference and at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 for a preliminary hearing, a sort-of mini-trial, with the calling of witnesses and presentation of documents, after which the judge will determine if there is enough evidence for a jury trial.

Deputy DA Kauffman appointed to Solano judgeship

Longtime Solano County Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey C. Kauffman will don the black robes of a superior court judge in the coming days in the Justice Center in Fairfield. Gov. Jerry Brown last week announced Kauffman's appointment along with 32 other attorneys statewide also elevated to superior court judgeships.

Fairfield man sentenced for killing pedestrian while intoxicated

A Fairfield man accused of killing a pedestrian nearly three years ago after driving onto a sidewalk while intoxicated was sentenced Thursday to a lengthy stretch in state prison. Visiting Judge Scott L. Kays ordered Nathan M. Vargas, who pleaded no contest last month in Department 9, to spend 15 years behind bars.

The defense attorney for a former California Highway Patrol sergeant told a jury Wednesday morning that his client was framed by a Vacaville police detective. The detective is Jeff Datzman, a longtime law enforcement officer who specializes in computer crimes.
