Senior Millage campaign off and running

KALAMAZOO -- Supporters of a millage request to convince voters to approve a senior millage in Kalamazoo County launched their campaign last night at the Arcadia Brewing Company and drew a sizable crowd on a very hot day in June. The County is asking for a third of a mill to fully support programs for the growing aging population in Kalamazoo who are on fixed incomes and need a little help to stay out of nursing homes.

$1.1M land deal will bring 135 apartment units to downtown Kalamazoo

A city-owned downtown surface parking lot was sold to make room for 135 apartment units, offices and retail space in Kalamazoo. Monday, the City Commission approved an agreement to sell Lot 2 for $1.1 million to developers 400 Rose, LLC and Park@Cedar II, LLC. The entities are owned by The Hinman Company and AVB Inc., which plan to build a $24.2 million, four-story mixed-use development on 2.16 acres at the corner of Rose and Lovell streets.

MSP looking for alleged hit-and-run driver who struck motorcycle

Hearing set for shooting spree suspect's appeal

Charles Pickett Jr., 52, was sentenced by Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Judge Paul J. Bridenstine Monday, June 11, to 35-55 years for each of five counts of murder, to be served concurrently, and 8-15 years for each count of operating while under the influence causing death. Bridenstine also handed down a sentence of 3-5 years on each of four counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, to be served concurrent to all other sentences.

Man shot in stomach near Roosevelt Apartments in Kalamazoo

At 4:27 p.m. Saturday, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to a report of a man who had been shot in the stomach in the 1300 block of East Main near the Roosevelt Apartments. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a 25-year-old Kalamazoo man who had suffered a gunshot wound to his stomach.
