LaBarbera, who is serving as Acting Police Chief until a replacement can be found for Sheriff-elect Jeff Dirkse, had an experience when he was just five years old that set the course of his life: While he was on a train headed to Oregon to visit family, a man boarded the train and, brandishing a knife, tried to hijack it. "We were in back, basically moms traveling with kids," LaBarbera said, "I remember the police, or whoever, moved us back to the very end, so when the guy came into our caboose, they were ready to tackle him... I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw."
