Riverside police, firefighters save distraught Orangecrest man who shot himself

Riverside police and firefighters worked to save a man who had shot himself in the chest, giving him medical advice during a cell-phone-video call to his Orangecrest neighborhood home, authorities said. Afterward, the man was in critical condition but expected to survive, the Riverside Police Department said in a news release.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a second is being sought after a June 7 beating during a night-long gathering in Riverside's Myra Linn Park left a victim hospitalized with severe head injuries, police said on Wednesday. Jonathan Ortiz, 30, and Michael Ortiz, 29, were both booked into the Central Detention Center on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime and theft of retail property, according to sheriff's officials.

Supervisors approve easement agreement with Caltrans

The widening of State Route 74 will require the California Department of Transportation to acquire a portion of Eller Park in Menifee from the County of Riverside, but the Riverside County Board of Supervisors showed support for that acquisition May 22. The supervisors' 5-0 vote approved the conveyance of a fee simple interest of 10,362 square feet and a temporary easement interest of 6,702 square feet to Caltrans, which will pay the fair market value price of $55,300. The supervisors also allowed the county to absorb the $16,000 of staff labor costs involved in the transaction, which will leave the county with proceeds of $39,300.

Brush fire reportedly burns 5 acres, damages nearby businesses in Riveride

A brush fire that burned about 5 acres Monday afternoon in Riverside also damaged some nearby businesses, according to intial reports. The fire, which was reported around 3 p.m. in the 6700 block of Doolittle Avenue, reportedly burned through heavy brush in an open field and then jumped a wash before coming up behind the businesses.

Riverside Fire Department firefighters put out a small brush fire after it jumped into a storage yard of a nearby business on Sunday, June 10, authorities said. About 2:44 p.m., 17 firefighters responded to reports of a quarter-acre brush fire in the area of Jurupa Avenue and Wilderness Avenue, the fire department said.
