Church deacon charged with criminal sexual conduct with minor

Hurmiz Ishak, 63, of Sterling Heights, formerly a deacon at St. Joseph Chaldean Catholic Church at 2442 E. Big Beaver Road, was arraigned on the felony charges in the 52-4 District Court Oct. 31. He remained in the Oakland County Jail on a $300,000 bond. He did not have an attorney on record with the court as of press time.

Muslim community group claims bias by city

A Muslim community group that has tried to open an Islamic center in Troy recently filed suit against the city, stating that the city arbitrarily and unjustly applied the zoning ordinance to prohibit the group from establishing a mosque. The Michigan Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Nov. 8 on behalf of the Adam Community Center, a Muslim community group, naming the city of Troy, the Troy City Council, the Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals and each individual member of the Zoning Board of Appeals as defendants.
