Originally settled by a Bishop in 1753 the name Salem rose from a translation of the Hebrew word Shalom. Winston was formed in 1849 and named after a Revolutionary War hero. The towns combined in 1889 when the mail offices for both areas were merged. The economy grew up mostly around the Reynolds Tobacco Company. It was in Winston Salem in 1911 that Wachovia Bank was formed. Today it is also home to the headquarters for Krispy Kreme donuts.
