Originally settled by a Bishop in 1753 the name Salem rose from a translation of the Hebrew word Shalom. Winston was formed in 1849 and named after a Revolutionary War hero. The towns combined in 1889 when the mail offices for both areas were merged. The economy grew up mostly around the Reynolds Tobacco Company. N. Carolina chicken-processing plant shuttered by fire sold

A poultry company has sold a chicken-processing plant to a longtime customer, months after a fire damaged the central portion of the North Carolina facility. The Winston-Salem Journal reports the Davie County Economic Development Commission announced Tuesday that the Wisconsin-based Brakebush Brothers Inc. purchased the Mocksville plant from House of Raeford Farms, becoming the third owner in seven years.

Wallace Carroll, a retired newspaper editor and publisher who campaigned against the Vietnam War and led his paper to a Pulitzer Prize for environmental reporting, died on Sunday in a nursing home in Winston-Salem, N. C. He was 95. Mr. Carroll had first joined the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel in 1949 as executive editor but left in 1955 to serve eight years as news editor of the Washington bureau of the New York Times . He returned to Winston-Salem as editor and publisher from 1963 to 1973.
